Bob: —and have been on FamilyLife Today and shared that story. They—

Tiffany: —remarried us. It was amazing!

16:00

It was kind of the process of—just to point out we were somewhere as a family—that he was with me, mostly to just watch the kids because I had something I had to do, work-related. There was a movie on TV—the scene that came on / a very innocent scene was depicting our story. This woman was telling this other woman, “How could you forgive your husband because of …?” It was literally like someone was telling our story on a TV screen.

I was almost pensive in turning to see what Jeremy’s response was; because in my mind: “Maybe he’s going to bolt out of the room, or he’s going to make a joke. I don’t know.” I turned; and he had tears streaming and the shaking. It was the first time I saw—just remorse. He put his hand out, and that was the first time we had touched in six months.

17:00

As the screen depicted “I chose forgiveness,” he uttered the words, “That’s what you did—you chose forgiveness.” [Emotion in voice] I was kind of able to look at him and say: “It’s because of Jesus. It’s just because of Jesus.” I asked God, very specifically: “Please help me love him the way that You do and to treat him the way I would want him to treat me—had I been the one that left, if I had been the one who kind of gave in to some darkness, and if I had been the one living with someone that needed to change.”

It was just a hand-holding. You know, sometime later, there was a kiss. It was literally like kind of doing these kind of milestone things to the point where, you know, a year goes by and we go on sort of a date to celebrate having made this decision a year ago—and sort of our one-year anniversary of being back together.

18:00

And he had planned a surprise wedding—it was just redemption! It was just: “This is what the kingdom of God looks like when we let it infiltrate our life! This is how beautiful your story can look if you can really trust and surrender to Jesus.”

The most beautiful picture was, you know, getting out of the car. I am crying; and I see all of these precious people who have loved us—and then these three little people come around the corner and [emotion in voice] to see our children. They don’t even understand the magnitude of why Mommy’s crying / they don’t even know all of the details of what went wrong and how broken we were.

They just saw their parents in love. Our daughter asked, “Why is Mommy crying so hard?” Jeremy said: “She’s happy. It’s just because she’s happy.” I just hugged her, and hugged her, and hugged her. I thought, “She will maybe—hopefully—never fully know how much that moment meant to me because of what her life was about to look like,—

19:00

—“but because of grace, because of the cross, because of forgiveness and hope, her life and her brothers’ lives are forever altered.” I just remember seeing that image of them kind of running around the corner—and that’s worth every bit of it.

So when we meet couples that say, “Well, I don’t want to stay together just for the kids,” we have a different opinion about that because God can use your kids to change you. Your children can be the best reason to actually try to work on it.

Dennis: Well, I’ve been thinking about this—so I’m going to go ahead and say what I’ve been thinking about. You may already have something like this and not need it, but I’m going to give you guys three things; okay? And the first thing has to do with those three kids.

For a number of years, we created and printed a marriage covenant that was designed so that you, Jeremy, and you, Tiffany, could sign it; but have your children sign it as well—

20:00

—and hang it in your home as a statement of your covenant with one another.

I keep thinking the thought—so I’m going to offer that. You may already have something in your home like that, so you may not need it.

Tiffany: That’s awesome.

Dennis: The second thing I want to give you is—because marriage is one long process of redemption—you’ve obviously seen it come back from the dead—but it’s still a long process of redemption—I want to give you a free weekend to the Weekend to Remember. I want to give you a registration for you guys to go.

But, then, the third thing, Jeremy, that has literally more significance—not more but has significance—is to give you Passport2Purity® for you to go through with your son, which may not have ever happened if this relationship here [marriage] had severed.

Jeremy: Right; right.

21:00

Dennis: I think I can look you in the eye and promise you that it’s going to be a great weekend—God will show up. I want to hear what happens, because I think He’s got something very special in store for you as you get away to prepare your son for adolescence—you’re there.

Jeremy: We are there. Thank you.

Dennis: I’m proud of you guys for not quitting.

Tiffany: Thank you.

Jeremy: Thank you.

Bob: I think all of us appreciate your vulnerability, not just on this program, but in the book that you’ve written, which is called Need You Now, which is a book that we’ve got in our FamilyLife Today Resource Center. I think a lot of people are going to want to get a copy of this, not just for themselves, but to share with people who are in a difficult spot in their marriage. This book is a story of hope. You can order it from us online at FamilyLifeToday.com. We’ve also got Plumb’s music CD, Need You Now. So you can order both the music CD and the book when you go to FamilyLifeToday.com.

22:00

Or call us toll-free at 1-800-FL-TODAY to order either or both of those resources.

Let me also remind folks that this weekend is the last weekend where you can sign up for an upcoming Weekend to Remember marriage getaway—pay the regular price for yourself, and your spouse comes free. The buy one/get one free opportunity expires this weekend.

If you want to join us at one of the 40 upcoming getaways this fall, or if you need more information, go online at FamilyLifeToday.com; or call, toll-free, at 1-800-“F” as in family, “L” as in life, and then the word, “TODAY.” We’ll answer any questions we can and get you registered for your getaway this fall at a Weekend to Remember marriage getaway.

Now, quickly, before we wrap things up, we want to say, “Happy Anniversary!” tomorrow to friends of ours who live in Managua, Nicaragua, in Central America—Dan and Lisa Van Zoest.

23:00

Tomorrow, they celebrate their 20th wedding anniversary. We know the Van Zoests because they have hosted The Art of Marriage® before. All the way to Managua: “Happy anniversary!” to Dan and Lisa and to all of you who are celebrating anniversaries today, or tomorrow, or Sunday. I hope you have a great anniversary celebration.

We think anniversaries are a big deal. We’ve been celebrating our 40th anniversary this year. We just want to say, “Thank you,” to listeners, like you, who make these anniversaries happen. When you support the work of FamilyLife Today, you’re actually partnering with us to help others. Those who are being helped are turning around and helping others they know. It really is a great multiplication effect of what God is doing through this ministry.

If you can help with a donation today, you can do so online at FamilyLifeToday.com; or call 1-800-FL-TODAY. Be sure to ask for the FamilyLife 2017 calendar—we’re happy to send that to you as our thank-you gift when you make a donation today.

24:00

And I hope you have a great weekend. I hope you and your family are able to worship together in church this weekend, and I hope you can join us on Monday. Dr. Al Mohler is going to be here. We’re going to have a very interesting conversation about how we live out our faith in a winsome, yet bold, way in this culture. There’s a lot to talk about; isn’t there? I hope can you tune in for that.

I want to thank our engineer today, Keith Lynch, along with our entire broadcast production team. On behalf of our host, Dennis Rainey, I'm Bob Lepine. We will see you back next time for another edition of FamilyLife Today.

FamilyLife Today is a production of FamilyLife of Little Rock, Arkansas.
