The phrase Spare the rod, spoil the child, isn't found in the Bible, but Proverbs does talk about the rod of punishment. Scripture uses it as a figure of speech for discipline and it's an act of love. Proverbs 13:24 says, If you do not punish your children, you don't love them, but if you love your children, you will correct them. The resolve to correct our children in a way that moves their heart toward godliness is an act of love. Learning how to do that is a part of being a good parent.

Ron: Where do you buy a rod of correction?

Announcer: For FamilyLife Blended®, here’s Ron Deal.

Ron: “Spare the rod, spoil the child,” right? Well, that phrase isn’t found anywhere in the Bible, but Proverbs does talk about the “rod of punishment.” Now, rod sounds kind of harsh. But scripture uses it as a figure of speech for discipline of any kind. And it’s an act of love. Proverbs 13:24 says, “If you do not punish your children, you don’t love them, but if you love your children, you will correct them.”

You see, the resolve to correct our children in a way that moves their heart toward godliness is an act of love. Learning how to do that is a part of being a good parent. Now, don’t be confused. You don’t buy the rod of punishment. You are it. For FamilyLife Blended, I’m Ron Deal.
