I cringe when I hear of a stepparent who asks their spouse to get rid of family photos. Or who redecorates the house soon after moving in. The message is, Your past is gone and I don't want you to have any attachment to it. Well, that out with the old, in with the new approach is pretty offensive, especially to stepkids. And if you were insecure about the place in their lives before, you really should be now. Listen, better to embrace their past than try to erase it. Step in with grace.

Ron: I cringe every time I hear of a stepparent who asks their spouse to get rid of family photos. Or who redecorates the entire house soon after moving in.The message is, “Your past is gone and I don’t want you to have any attachment to it—whether good, bad, or ugly.”

Well, that “out with the old, in with the new” approach is pretty offensive, especially to stepkids. And if you were insecure about the place in their lives before, you really should be now. Listen, better to embrace their past than try to erase it. Step in with grace. For FamilyLife Blended, I’m Ron Deal.
