If January is any indication, 2019 is going to be chock-full of headlines about marriage. But what’s new, right?
On January 9, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos announced the end of his 25-year marriage to wife MacKenzie. About the same time, sports hero Tim Tebow announced he is off the market after proposing to 2017 Miss Universe Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters.
The fame of these two men extends beyond their industries. They are household names, which is why their respective marriage news has taken the world by storm. But their situations couldn’t be more different.
Bezos is the richest man in the world, which is naturally where all the focus is. That and the other woman in the picture that preceded the divorce announcement. So incredibly sad.
MacKenzie stands to be the richest woman in the world, depending on how the divorce settlement pans out. Only God knows what’s really going on in their hearts and minds. But I think it’s fair to say that after all is said and done, they’ll both be left with a broken marriage, a split empire, a flood of headlines, a division of assets, and a lot of money—which we all know can’t really buy much at all.
Tebow, on the other hand, has much to gain. Hailed for his unwavering faith, Tebow’s engagement at age 31 demonstrates that good things come to those who wait—for the right person and for the right reasons.

When questioned in the past about finding a wife, he said: “They have to really love God. My faith is important to me—it’s the most important thing—and I need to be with someone who also shares that faith.” He’s also been quoted as saying, “I’m just looking for someone who has a good heart. They have to be kind, and they have to care about people who can’t do anything for them in return.”
What an encouragement to other Christian singles who are wondering about their future mate.
Despite their differing scenarios, my prayer for both the Bezos and Tebows is the same: a happy ending.
I have seen the redemption couples can experience after a painful divorce, and I have seen the fruit that comes from couples who pursue oneness with God and each other. May He show up in glorious and unexpected ways for both the Bezos and the Tebows.
